That, or go the traditional route and just do it better than anyone else does. Developers need to come up with ways to set them apart. Especially now, when third-person explode-a-thons rule the marketplace.
Rogue trooper norts series#
The rebooted strip would never quite catch on after that, partly due to unpopular writing by Michael Fleisher in the early years and then a revolving series of new writers who tried to make it more 'classic Rogue' and explain how this followed on from the original strip.Action games tend to get stale rather quickly. This version of Rogue was called Friday and appeared a straight reboot (a twist, ignored in later strips, was that this wasn't even Nu-Earth but a now toxic Earth) Gibbons would, in his own words, see it as "my chance to put everything into Rogue Trooper I wanted and take out all the crap, like the bio-chips". The strip had started to lose focus after Rogue took out his enemy, the Traitor General, and so editorial asked co-creator Dave Gibbons to do a revamp.

Rogue Trooper was one of 2000AD's more popular strips in the early 1980s, featuring the eponymous Rogue and his talking weapons Helm, Gunnar, and Bagman in their battles on Nu-Earth. Judge Friel needled Dredd that he'd been showing favouritism to Friday the whole time as they were both clones (Hagar having disparaged clones earlier), but Dredd denied it: saying if they held onto Friday, they'd have to keep him after the Southers left and "the guy looks like trouble." Hagar turned out to be a "trig" and detonated.ĭredd let Friday off for "a number of offences" due to the circumstances. In a rage and knowing his word as a "genetic freak" couldn't trump Hagar's, Friday broke out of the Judge's med-division and tracked Hagar down to a local bar. While Friday seemed resigned to his fate, Dredd suspected he was innocent and had Psi Division recover the clone's memories. Mojon ordered the use of a time drive to escape Nort forces and they arrived at Mega-City One in 2116, negotiating a 48-hour access to technology in exchange for medical aid.Īfter saving Mojon and a visiting Judge Dredd from "trigs", Souther ex-POWs rigged to be kamikaze agents, Friday was then accused of cowardice by Hagar (not wanting to be caught) and sentenced to execution.

He proved unable to warn the unit in time they were bombarded, with Friday injured and given amnesia, and forced into a retreat by spaceship.

While on patrol to see if he could spot a buildup, Friday saw Sergeant Hagar giving information to the Norts on where to attack. įriday linked up with General Mojon's Souther force in Red Zone, who were expecting an imminent Nort assault. In one of his later adventures, he found the Corporation were creating biochips with soldiers' memories encoded in them and was able to retrieve his dead friends Top, Lucky and Eightball, slotting them into his gun, backpack, and gun. A vengeful Friday killed his creator and returned to the war-torn world to join the soldiers who'd been abandoned there. Friday learned that both sides were secretly controlled by the Clavel Corporation, who had started the war for profits, and the Genetic Infantrymen had been tested to destruction. While this was done easily, they were then abandoned and left to die until only Friday was left.

Their first mission was to retake "Hill 392" on the toxic remnants of Earth. He was the second lead of the strip Rogue Trooper.įriday and his 'brothers' were created by the Southers in their war against the Norts, and trained to be living weapons. He can survive in almost any toxic environment and shrug off most poisons. He is part of a Genetic Infantry, an apparent culmination of the 22nd century's own genetic work. Friday, better known as the Rogue Trooper, is a clone soldier from the far future.
